In order to enhance the professional competence and teaching ability of our new faculty in the Department of Food Science and Engineering, and consolidate their basic teaching skills in the classroom, the trial teaching activities occurred at F381 on February 27th in the Department of Food Science and Engineering of the School of Food Engineering. Professor Jing Zhao, Dean of the Department of Food Science and Engineering hosted the activities. All faculty attended this activity.
Seven faculties from the Department of Food Science and Engineering did the wonderful trial teaching within the designated time, covering 8 courses of the incoming semester.
During the trial teaching of the course "Instrumental Analysis", Shuang Yang, a new faculty started with the basic concepts of chromatographic analysis and gradually introduced practical applications; In the course of "Food Technology English", bilingual teaching was conducted with detailed explanations of grammar and phrases related to nutrition. Lutong Yang, also a new faculty explained the specific programming procedures in "Fundamentals of AutoCAD Applications" in a clear and concise manner.Mengai Wang's "Food Analysis" provides a detailed analysis of the principles of fat determination.




Bowen Jiang's lecture on "Food Chemistry" mainly focuses on the physical properties and structures of water in Chapter 1. Mengni Cui's bilingual course "Food Nutrition and Hygiene" provides a deep analysis of the properties and content of proteins. Yang Cao's course "New Product Development and Technical Economic Analysis" provides in-depth explanations of the necessary theoretical knowledge and basic processes for new product development. Haoyuan Geng mainly discusses the basic concepts and calculation methods of gas-liquid equilibrium systems in the course of "Principles of Environmental Engineering".





After the trial teaching, the new and old faculties sat together, exchanged and discussed a lot about overall teaching design, teaching key and difficult points, teaching methods and techniques, teaching language standards, selection of teaching cases, integration of ideological and political education into the curriculum, and production of teaching powerpoints. While recognizing their strengths, they pointed out their shortcomings. Dean Jing Zhao suggests that the new faculty can pay more attention to the hot topics that young people are interested in at present, integrate these fresh contents into the classroom, make knowledge no longer boring, but closely related to students' lives, and truly stimulate their interest in learning.
The implementation of new faculty trial teaching activities is an effective measure to ensure teaching quality; It is also an important method for our department to play the role of experienced teachers’ "mentoring" and help new faculty grow. The Department of Food Science and Engineering will continue to focus on improving the quality of classroom teaching and building a good teaching atmosphere, continuously strengthening the training of young teachers, continuously optimizing the level of classroom teaching ability, and providing strong support for promoting high-quality teaching development.
